7 Quick Ways to Shed the Holiday Weight

After spending the last month binging on cookies, cocktails, and holiday treats, you may be struggling to get into your skinny jeans. But with a few of these expert tips, you’ll have no problem shedding the extra holiday pounds.

1. Don’t Skip Meals

It may be tempting to skip a meal after eating heavy holiday food and treats for the last month, but skipping a meal will make you hungrier and put your body and mind in a frenzy. Instead, eat frequent, small meals to curb your appetite, boost your energy, and even speed up your metabolism.

2. Take it Easy on the Cocktails

It wouldn’t be a holiday party with a glass or 2 of bubbly, but alcohol is full of empty calories: a 12-oz beer about 150 calories and a 6oz glass of red wine packs in 144 calories. The worst offenders are the classic holiday cocktails like eggnog and peppermint martinis that use creamy liqueurs as a base – it’s like drinking a heavy dessert! For every cocktail indulgence, have a glass of water.

3. Cut the Carbs

After stuffing yourself with Grandma’s stuffing and fruitcake, kickstart your diet by cutting out the white stuff – bread, bagels, crackers… When your body isn’t used to the sugar and salt in these type of carbs, it can hold a lot of water.

4. Eat Your Veggies

Vegetables are natural hunger and appetite suppressants, making you feel fuller for longer. Kick off your post-holiday diet with some healthy salads and lots of winter greens.

5. Avoid Soda

Sodas are yet another empty calories beverage that Americans tend to guzzle down on the regular. But they are full of sugar and empty calories, without satisfying your crave for food – which leads to doubling up your caloric intake for the day and overtime that can cause serious weight gain. If you are looking for carbonated drinks, try a zero calorie sparkling water.

6. Eat Smarter

Making healthy substitutions to unhealthy snacks goes a long way. If you’re craving candy, have some frozen grapes. Salty? Try air-popped popcorn instead of oil-popped. This also allows you to control how much butter and salt is on the popcorn. Dark chocolate is a healthier alternative to chocolaty sweets.

7. Relax

Studies have shown that when you are stressed, you binge eat. If the holidays stress you out, don’t reach for another cookie. Try yoga, meditation, or simple breathing exercises.

Say “Bye Bye” to Baby Bulge

Moms know all about the baby bulge. They are all too familiar with that midsection pudge that lingers on their gut – baby weight that stayed for good. Similar to the man’s beer gut, the baby bulge is hard to trim down. Women’s metabolism is different than men’s, which makes it hard to lose weight anyway, but add baby weight into the mix, and it can be downright frustrating.

Some celebrities walk the red carpet just weeks after having a baby and their tummies are flat but what you don’t see is how many layers of Spanx they have on and all the behind the scenes work with stylists and personal trainers.

The reality is that it can take 8 weeks just for your uterus to shrink back to pre-baby size, so give yourself a break. However, the baby bulge can linger for years. Your body experienced a lot of changes in a short amount of time, so don’t expect your body to bounce right back. While there could be medical diagnoses for your belly pooch, a lot of the time, it can be corrected with patience and the right balance of exercise and diet.

Walk with the stroller

Taking a moderate intensity walk or jog every day for approximately 30 minutes can help you loose the baby weight pretty quickly. Cardiovascular exercises of all kinds are proven to aid weight loss around the belly. In on particular study by researchers at Duke University Medical Center, they found that women who exercised lost weight specifically around their stomachs, whereas people who didn’t exercise at all experiences an 9% increase of fat. Any exercise that kickstarts your heart rate is a good exercise for weight loss.

Boost Your Protein Intake

Eating protein helps your body burn fat faster, especially around your middle. Eating protein like chicken, beans, fish, and eggs are full of nutrients your body needs to function and thrive (especially if you are a new mom who is nursing). Having eggs for breakfast is a great way to boost your body for the day.

Take a Nap

Every mom wants to hear those 3 words: take a nap! But getting plenty of sleep has been linked with weight loss because you aren’t tempted to indulge in late-night snacks or junk food. When your body adopts a new, strange sleep pattern (like those forced upon new moms with newborns), your metabolism gets upset and it can be harder to lose weight. The housework can wait – sleep when your baby sleeps.

Hang Out with Other Moms

Peer pressure is real. And it is easy to be influenced by others. And this is the good kind of peer pressure! Socializing with other moms can be encouraging – exercise is always more fun with friends, and you can have other moms hold you accountable while you journey back to pre-baby-body. Find other moms in your area to connect with here.

While the process might seem long and grueling, it is possible to transform your body and rid yourself of the baby bulge with doing the right kind of exercise and eating healthy choices.

6 Things to Add to Your Daily Routine that Eliminates Cellulite

Cellulite is one of the top complaints women have about their bodies. And the vast majority of women get cellulite sometimes in their life. The reason women get cellulite more than men is because the genders don’t have the same collagen structure. Collagen is the necessary fiber that sits right below the dermis and is responsible for plumpness and firmness in skin.

Collagen fibers in men run crisscross which allows the fibers to better support the fat beneath the skin. However, in women, the collagen fibers run vertically, which allow the fat tissue to come through and giving skin the “cottage cheese” look.

There are ways to naturally reduce the appearance of cellulite and by adding one of these six, simple things into your daily routine, you will start to see less cellulite, and in some cases, eliminate cellulite for good.

1. Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is the best way to keep your body healthy and keep your skin looking taunt and toned. Hydrated skin helps collagen production, which keeps your skin plump and firm. It is recommended that adults drink eight, 8oz glasses of water a day to stay fully hydrated.

2. Dry Brushing

While there is no scientific-based evidence that claims dry brushing reduces cellulite, there is still a lot of support for this habit. Dry brushing opens up the skin’s pores. By making long, sweeping brushing motions towards the heart, the skin is stimulated. Don’t brush too hard – the skin shouldn’t be red! Use a natural bristle brush to invigorate the skin, increase blood flow, and promote cell growth. And while there isn’t medical proof that it helps reduce cellulite, you will notice glowing, smoother, tighter skin.

3. Include a Little Cardio

Getting your heart pumping a little throughout the day will help reduce the appearance of cellulite on your thighs and help you lose any little bit of fat you may have. Incorporate 20-30 minutes of high-intensity cardiovascular exercise into your daily routine, at least 5 times a week. Cardio can include many different activities: running, swimming, or playing a sport like soccer or basketball.

4. Coffee Scrubs

Coffee scrubs can be beneficial in reducing cellulite. Not only does massaging your skin help increase blood flow, but the caffeine and antioxidants in coffee helps tighten skin. Cellulite appearances can be heightened when your skin is uneven, partially due to dead skin cells. A coffee scrub will also exfoliate your skin making it look brighter and even.

Try this mixture:

  • 1/4 cup coffee grounds
  • 3 tablespoons sugaror brown sugar
  • 2-3 Tablespoons of melted coconut oil

Form a paste and massage onto skin, then rinse. You’ll see results in no time!

5. Moisturize Naturally

Moisturizing daily, or twice daily, is important to healthy looking skin. However, constantly adding toxins on your skin by using chemical-heavy beauty products is just as bad for your skin as eating junk food. Use a simple, natural moisturizer like Coconut Oil to help detox your skin and keep it hydrated.

6. Eat Healthier

Eating more vegetables and whole grain fibers will help remove toxins from your body that gets stored as fat cells. Removing the waste from your body helps promote healthier skin and body functions that keep you looking younger.
